Improve Golf Motivation To Play Better Golf

What do you love about playing golf?

I would like to offer an exercise that could really help you maintain your optimal golf mindset in the heat of competition.

What is your deep motivation for playing competitive golf?

There are two basic types of motivation.

Intrinsic and extrinsic.

Extrinsic motivators in golf could be, “I love winning. . I like beating my competitors. I like the prestige. I love the money it gives me.”

Intrinsic motivators in golf could be, “I feel good about myself. I love the challenge of me vs the course. I love getting better at golf. I love the feeling of playing golf really well.”

Generally speaking most mental game experts recommend having more intrinsic than extrinsic motivators. The biggest reason is that you have more control of the intrinsic ones so it tends to lead us into an easier process towards our goals.

  • Remind yourself of all the reasons you love playing golf while you are competing.
  • Get clear in your mind what these reasons are and remember them whenever you feel a drop in motivation.

The difficulty with extrinsic motivators is that they are largely out of our control. This can lead us to feeling more pressure and tension while competing. If we have a good connection to powerful intrinsic motivators like the deep desire to become a better and better golfer then we do have full control over this.

ACTION DRILL

  • Write out your top 10 reasons for enjoying your golf.
  • Notice how many reasons are in your control and how many are not.
  • Try to connect more strongly to your motivations that you have full control of.
  • When you feel a drop in focus in a round remind yourself of the reasons you love playing golf.

Being more connected to your intrinsic motivations can really improve your golf mental toughness  and ease your journey on the road of competitive golf.
